For many people all over the world, the image that blinks in a person’s mind when talking about a car is a sedan. The three-box type body of the sedan was dominant in the last century. It got the name of three-box type sedan is due to its structure. Its structure can be classified as three boxes such as the engine area at the front, the main cabin area in the middle, and the trunk area at the rear part of the car.
From the seventies to nineties, the hatchback pulled back the sedan’s dominance in Europe and in some parts of Asia also. But the international market share of the sedan type body style increased again in the first ten years of this century increasing the sales of the cars of this type.
Today, major brands like BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi are growing their range of cars with new body-types similar to the sedan. These premium brands are historical trendsetters and we hope that other brands will also follow this route, designing models alternative to sedans.
To understand this more easily, consider the cars today at 80th Geneva motor show. The Mercedes F800 shows that the traditional three-box sedan has got some sleek design. The other models designed as alternatives to the conventional sedan in the current auto show include Opel Flextreme GT/E, BMW 5GT and Audi A5 Sportback.
