WAN Optimization Technique: Deduplication

Data deduplication technique is useful in identifying and eliminating the redundant data present in the wide area network. Deduplication technique significantly reduces the storage capacity as only the unique data is stored and also improves bandwidth efficiency.

In WAN deduplication if the file is sent first time across the WAN, deduplication algorithms identify data patterns in the file and store these patterns in WAN optimization appliances on each end of the WAN link. If the files are passed again, the deduplication algorithms in the appliances identify these patterns and replace large pieces of data with notably smaller pieces of data.

Types of Deduplication:

The types of deduplication are

(a)File deduplication- It is used to eliminate deduplicate files.

(b)Block and Bit deduplication- In this, contents of the file are analyzed and the unique iterations of each bit or block are saved.

Deduplication benefits:

Data deduplication increases the protection of the data, accelerates the speed of service and it also reduces costs for data protection. Data deduplication is the tool that deduplicates VMDK files, snapshot files, etc. in the virtual environments. It helps in reducing carbon footprints, thereby contributing to the Data Center Transformation process through preserving the storage space. It also helps in shortening of backup and response time. Longer Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is achieved through the optimal use of disk space, which allows longer disk retention periods.

The data deduplication process is dependent on cryptographic functions to identify duplicate data segments. One disadvantage is that if a collision happens, it will lead to loss of data. For a business to avoid these kind of problems the APM consulting is useful as they have developed various solutions to address this problem.
