What does the General Dentistry Include?

Maintenance of healthy teeth is essential in order to maintain a proper healthy body. General dentistry includes the primary care of the teeth and gums. It focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders, and diseases affecting the gums, teeth, and associated regions of jaw and face of the body. A person who is concerned with the care and maintenance of teeth is a general dentist. Some of the practices that a general dentist does include fillings, bridge, root canal treatment, dental cleaning and so on.

Crowns:
Crowns are nothing but the caps or covers that are fitted over damaged or broken teeth. The structure of the teeth is maintained by them. They help in protecting them from further damage.

Fillings:
Different types of materials including mercury, gold, amalgam, porcelain, and composite resin are used to fill the teeth.

Root Canal Treatment:
At some conditions, the tissue or pulp within the tooth gets infected. A general dentist performs root canal treatment in order to treat it.

Bridge:
General dentistry also includes fitting of bridges. An artificial tooth that is anchored to a couple of crowns is called a bridge. They help to secure the false tooth in place in order to ensure a natural look to the teeth.

Dental Cleaning:
Dental cleaning includes scaling and polishing of teeth. A general dentist also advises on brushing and flossing.

General dentistry also includes providing dentures and bonding services. Dentures are the removable false teeth that are inserted to replace a few missing teeth. All the treatments related to the mouth, face and jaw are termed as oral and maxillofacial treatments. A general dentist may also perform these treatments. Cosmetic dental procedures including teeth whitening, lumineers, veneers, and cosmetic bonding are also a part of general dentistry. Thus, general dentistry includes the branches of oral surgery, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and periodontics.
